Wasatch Downs #13 Sunrise Christian in Heartland Hoops Classic Feature Game
(February 9, 2019) — The biggest challenge Wasatch Academy faced against Sunrise Christian Academy may have been being too successful.
The Tigers, ranked No. 14 in the nation by USA Today, jumped out to a nine-point lead by the end of the first quarter and went on to top the No. 13 Buffaloes 65-53 at the Heartland Hoops Classic Saturday.
“They came out ready to play,” Wasatch Academy coach David Evans said of his players. “It’s a little hard, I think, to play when we got up more than we anticipated. Then we started playing tight. But that’s a fantastic win for us. Sunrise is such a good team, so well coached, such good players. We’re excited about it.”
Minnesota recruit Marvin “Tre” Williams III scored 19 points for Wasatch Academy (24-3), which is located in Mt. Pleasant, Utah.
“We try to win every game that we play, so that was for us maybe one of the best wins we’ve had all year,” Evans said.
Sunrise Christian (17-5) of Wichita, Kansas, was topped by Grant Sherfield’s 20 points.
Evans said he wasn’t sure what sort of effect the win would have on his team.
This was Sunrise Christian’s third appearance at the Heartland Hoops Classic.
Wasatch Academy was making its first trip to Grand Island, and Evans said it was certainly an enjoyable one, and not only because of the win.
“It’s been unbelievable,” he said. “The way that we’ve been treated has been second-to-none. (Organizer) Tino (Martinez) has been so professional and everything is set up so well. We’re very grateful for the experience.”
